We love Christmas snow and good spring rain, but we hate the idea of water re-entering the home.
Your gutters are designed to direct water away from your house and control the flow from the roofline. If this is not done, mildew and landscaping damage, as well as wet basements and leaky roofing, can all result. Although gutter strain due to wind, vegetal debris and heavy rain are inevitable, it can be avoided with careful maintenance in Fall or Spring.
Although cleaning gutters can be a straightforward task, it is important to remember that safety is paramount. Helpful hands are also encouraged. You can also let the pros handle it!
If you are up for the challenge, wait until your next sunny day and grab your ladder. Then, turn on your radio and get to work. This guide will assist you in getting things moving again. Rain, rain, go away.
1.Make sure your ladder is up to the job
It is fun to look out at your neighborhood from the top of the roof. Make sure your ladder is on a level surface.
2. Assemble Your Tools
You will need to have work gloves, a brush, as well as a container to store the debris you collect. While not required, knee pads can be helpful for navigating rough surfaces.
3. Clear the Gutters
Use your gloves and tools to remove the leaf and twig debris out of the gutters. Use a gutter scoop to remove compacted debris. Begin near the downspout and make sure to remove and clean your strainer.
4. Flush Your Gutters
Attach a nozzle on your hose to spray the debris. Spray the gutters with the stream facing the downspout. Continue spraying until the gutter is clean.
5. Check Your Downspouts
Sometimes, a blockage can occur in your downspout. This is especially true if the strainer has been damaged. A blockage can be detected if there is a reduced flow from the downspout or water at the bottom that is lower than what is coming in.
Your hose can be used to spray directly at the spout. If that fails to clear the blockage, a plumber's serpent may be required. Continue to work until water runs freely from the gutters into the downspout.
6. General Maintenance
It is time to inspect your gutters now that they are clean. Make sure gutters aren't sagging or separating. To save yourself from future headaches, add supports or replace them immediately.
Gutter sealant can be used to fill any gaps or cracks. Use a soapy rag to clean any mildew and then repaint as necessary. Consider a complete replacement if your gutters show excessive wear. These materials are made to last and damage is usually indicative of their end of life.
